Concerns raised over delay for adoptive people accessing information

A number of local TD's have highlighted their concerns over the delay in access to information for adopted people.

Independent Donegal TD, Thomas Pringle introduced the Adoption Information Bill along with
Deputy Catherine Connolly at the beginning of this year seeking to address Ireland's laws around adoptive persons data.

He said under the current system, adoptive people do not have access to their birth certificate or records relating to their adoption.

Deputy Pringle believes every Irish citizen should have access to their birth certificate.

Sligo/Leitrim Independent TD, Marian Harkin says there have been over 44,000 adoption orders in Ireland since 1953.

She says the number of people who have had their request for a birth cert denied in recent years is 'significant'.

While Sinn Feinn Sligo/Leitrim TD, Martin Kenny said this issues around people accessing their certs should have been dealt with by previous governments.

He says time is 'ticking away' for a lot of people who can no longer wait.
