Sligo County Council or its insurers paid out almost €1.4m in compensation claims during a period of 20 months to the end of August last year.
About 100 claims resulted in payouts ranging from as high as €200,000 to as low as €44.
More than 30 arose because of pot holes, about eight related to footpaths and six as a result of people slipping or tripping.
However, Council Director of Services Bartley Gavin points out that some of the claims would be from the council itself, for example as a resuilt of flooding or fire to its own property.
