Council investigating oil leakage reports on Rossnowlagh Beach

Donegal County Council has confirmed that two inspections have been carried out week following reports of oil leaking onto Rossnowlagh Beach.

Given that this issue seems to arise periodically and disappear again, it may point to the filling of an oil tank which is leaking, maybe above a certain point where leaks can occur.

Anyone in the Rossnowlagh area who has filled their oil tank in the past week or so should investigate if there are any indications that oil is being lost either through the tank, valves or pipework.

It is known that certain older brands of plastic oil tanks can perish in sunlit areas over time and small cracks develop.

After filling such a tank above a certain level, oil may then leak into drains and be transported to the beach in wet weather, before subsequently stopping when the level in the tank has dropped again.

In addition, it is known that there are some underground metal tanks in the area near the hotel and these may be susceptible to corrosion.

Donegal County Council are continuing investigations and would be grateful for any assistance in this matter to see it resolved as soon as possible.
