Council seeks clarification on landing facilities at Inishmurray island

Council seeks clarification on landing facilities at Inishmurray island

Sligo County Council is to seek clarification as to who exactly is responsible for providing safe landing facilities for visitors to Inishmurray Island.

The move comes as some councillors strongly reject any moves by Transport Minster Shane Ross to make the council liable for providing the landing facilities so as to enable paid excursions to the island to resume.

They stopped following instructions earlier this year from the Marine Safety Office on heatlh and safety grounds.

At this week's meeting of Sligo Municipal District, Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry called for the council to start surveying and design work in preparation for improvements to the landing facilities there.

But other councillors insisted it was the Department of Transport that should do and pay for the work, with the result Cllr MacSharry agreed to defer his motion to allow time get clarification on who is responsible:
