A Sligo councillor is proposing that the local authority recruit either paid or volunteer wardens during the summertime to ensure bye-laws in rural areas are enforced.
However, Cllr Donal Gilroy has been told insurance and lack of money are among the reasons the idea is not feasible at this time.
Cllr Gilroy says the wardens could work and assist fulltime council officials and gardai in the enforcement of bye-laws in dealing with offences in relation to issues such as parking, obstruction of roads, littering, overnight camping, control of dogs and horses, and vandalism of public and private property.
However, a number of difficulties in implementing such a proposal were outlined to Cllr Gilroy when he proposed it at a recent meeting of councillors.
He told Ocean FM News what he had in mind . . . and why it was not agreed to.
