[UPDATED 1PM:]  Counting is underway for the Presidential Election in the North West

The counting is underway in the Presidential election with Michael D Higgins on course for reelection with a large majority.

It looks like Peter Casey will be coming in second.

The latest from the Sligo Count with a sample size of 15% shows:

Michael D Higgins:     54%,

Peter Casey:                  26%

Liadh Ní Riada             6%,

Sean Gallagher             6%,

Joan Freeman              5%,

Gavin Duffy                  2%

 

Tallyman at the count in Sligo, Padraig Harte says there are some interesting findings.

In Donegal, the latest tallies show that Michael D Higgins holds 39%  with Peter Casey in a very close second on 33%.

 

There was a box in Letterkenny that had 13 spoiled votes with an anti-abortion message written on them.
