Covid-19 forcing more local services to close over weekend

With new Covid-19 cases now at their highest level since the pandemic began, many businesses throughout the north west are struggling because of staff absences.

Yesterday evening, 23,817 new cases of the virus were reported, with 941 patients in hospital, and 90 in ICU.

The level of infection, the number of close contacts and the resultant staff shortages, combined with the 8pm closing time, has resulted in numerous pubs and restaurants throughout the region deciding to shut their doors temporarily.

But many non-hospitality services have also been hit, for example the Sligo credit union offices in Collooney, Co Sligo, and Drumkeerin, Co. Leitrim, both of which will be closed this weekend.

Barry O Flynn, manager of Sligo Credit Union, says there's also the uncertainty in trying to deal with the changing situation.
