Dáil fails to vote in Taoiseach and new government

The Dáil has failed to vote in the new government following its resumption.

Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy previously suspended the house three times earlier this afternoon amid calls for scrapping of the proposed recess until February 5th.

Deputy Murphy was also questioned over her fairness and objectivity in her role as Ceann Comhairle.

The sitting did resume shortly after 4.20pm following a meeting between party whips, where Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughton said all parties had agreed to allow the democratic process to proceed and nominate Micheál Martin as Taoiseach.

However, the opposition, which included Donegal and Sinn Féin TD’s Pearse Doherty and Pádraig Mac Lochlainn disagreed and voiced their disproval on the floor:

The Dáil was resume on Thursday morning at 9am.
