Decision "needs to be made" on Western Rail Corridor says campaigner

A decision 'needs to be made' on what to do with the Western Rail Corridor.

That's according to Peter Bowen Walsh, a spokesperson with West on Track, a community based campaign for re-opening the passenger and freight line between Limerick and Sligo and, eventually extending northward to Donegal and Derry.

A Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communication was held last week on the All-Island Rail Review.

Submissions were sought on the review which will now be discussed and used a basis for an all island strategy on rail.

There is some contention in the North West region on whether the rail line should be converted into a greenway or if it should be preserved with the intention of eventually reopening.

Speaking to OceanFM News, he believes it would be 'foolish' to build a greenway on the railway and feels money could be allocated to build a route beside the tracks.
