Five dead whales have been found stranded off the west coast, including along Donegal and Sligo.
All were deep-sea diving Cuvier's beaked whales.
Mick O Connell, of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, says it would be relatively normal for three or four strandings of this species in Ireland in a year but highly unusual to find so many at separate locations in a few days.
