The Oireachtas Agriculture Committee is to quiz department officials this week on an ongoing review of the Regional Vet Labs around the country.
There are presently 6 labs nationwide and three of these including the one in Doonally in Sligo are recommended for closure as part of a review commissioned by the Department of Agriculture.
Farmers say it would be a huge blow for this region and could lead to a much higher chance of the spread of disease in farm animals.
Farmers would have to bring animals to Athlone for testing or for post-mortems if the lab in Doonally in Sligo was to close.
Fianna Fail spokesperson on Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has called for officials to come before the committee tomorrow:
