Killybegs is set to benefit from a €50 million investment in a bid to futureproof the region's fish processing sector as well as maintaining and increasing jobs.
According to Bord Iascaigh Mhara, several companies are currently undergoing improvements which it's hoped in turn will modernise seafood processing facilities and add cutting-edge energy efficiency initiatives.
Gallagher Bros. Ltd. And Killybegs Seafoods are both making sustainable investments with support also coming from the Brexit Process Capital Support Scheme.
The scheme, implemented by BIM, was recommended by the Seafood Taskforce established by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue.
It's hoped that the funding injection will attract more fishing vessels to land and discharge catch at Killybegs that might otherwise go to other countries.
