EU to give farmers cash for carbon

Farmers could avail of a whole new farming sector in a bid to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

As part of a new EU initiative, the head of the European Commission climate division has told EU officials that they are drawing up plans for a new scheme to incentivise farmers to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

This would work by measuring how much carbon is in farming soil and catching carbon by planting hedgerows and trees. The carbon would then be measured by the tonne and paid to the farmer.
