MEPs say action needs to be taken to stop the 'alarming' spread of Lyme disease across Europe.
They have called on the European Commission to create a plan to combat the disease that is mainly spread through a tick.
Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fail TD Eamon Scanlon raised the issue nationally early this year.
Currently there is no way to test for it in the country with samples being sent to a lab in Germany for analysis.
Deputy Scanlon welcomes the news and says over 2,000 people are currently suffering from the illness in the country.
