Farm rallies go ahead in Ballymote and Raphoe

Farm rallies go ahead in Ballymote and Raphoe

 

Farmers have taken to the streets in towns across the country today for a nationwide rally.

 

The events were organised by the Irish Farmers Association.

Rallies have got underway in Ballymote and Raphoe shortly after 11 am this morning

 

They highlighted the importance of farming to the rural economy and warned against the dangers of current CAP proposals.

The IFA says the current direction of the common agricultural policy and the Government's Climate Action Bill could shut down commercial farming in Ireland.

Former IFA Chairman Eddie Davitt attended the rally in Ballymote this morning he says it caused minimum disruption to the business community in the town.

Brendan McLaughlin is the IFA chairperson in Donegal he says today rally was well attended and attracted support from local business people as well as farmers

Not all farmers are in agreement with today's protest the Leitrim branch of the IFA voted not to protest.

 

Sligo farmer Vincent Roddy is a policy advisor with Irish Natura Hill Farmers Association he hopes that farmers have not been protesting against their own best interested this morning
