852 people waited for a bed at the hospital over the course of the month.

It reflects an increase in the number of those who waited over the course of January 2024, where over 701 people were left without a bed at the facility.

Letterkenny University Hospital also recorded a decrease in the number waiting in January of this year compared to the previous year.

497 patients waited at the facility in January, falling from 709 in 2024.

In a statement, the INMO said “few measures were taken to reduce overcrowding this month despite the very clear risks for injury and illness across the country. The result has been the worst overcrowding we have ever seen.”

The INMO have described the system as “overwhelmed” and are calling on the HSE to “outline exactly how much private capacity they have acquired from the private sector and confirm that senior decision-makers are on site in each hospital this weekend.”
