Irelands first National Awareness Day for Family Carers is taking place today.
The event is organised by Family Carers Ireland who are to 'Shine a Light' on the longest day of the year for the significant number of people who are already caring for a loved one.
The event is important in that according to a CSO report, 1 in 5 people will need to care for a loved one by 2030 with their currently being 355,000 carers already in Ireland.
They are encouraging people to show their support by purchasing a 'Shine a Light' pin.
Head of Communications, Catherine Cox says carers save the government €10b each year.
