It’s been confirmed that the first phase of the new North West Hospice inpatient building is on track for an autumn 2025 opening.
Former Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly turned the sod on the building in February of last year.
It will provide 12 beds, all single rooms.
As the current hospice building was never purpose-built, the new single rooms will ensure the dignity and privacy of all patients and their families.
It will also provide facilities for Outpatient Day Services, the Community Palliative Care Team, Hospital Palliative Care Team, and office space for the multidisciplinary team and administration staff.
It will also provide an additional 11- space car park with all parking to the front of the Hospice, which is dedicated for patient family use only.
This construction is on the current North West Hospice site located on the Sligo University Hospital campus.
Full services will continue throughout the project. The first phase of this construction project is the building of the new unit. This phase is currently at the “Topping out” of construction phase.
The current inpatient unit will then transfer all patients and services to the new unit. The second phase of the project will then commence with immediate effect. This second phase will refurbish the current inpatient unit space which consists of eight beds, three single rooms and five bedded ward, to facilitate administration offices for the multidisciplinary team. This second phase is to be complete in early 2026.
The clinical services at North West Hospice provide palliative care services for people with life limiting illnesses where they are residing, be that at home, in a nursing home, hospital or in its hospice.
