Former Donegal garda sergeant says drug testing proposals are 'contrary to the law'

A retired Donegal Garda sergeant says there is a fundamental flow about a proposal to introduce random drug testing for gardai.

Christy Galligan says there is no legal basis for such a move.

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has called on Garda management to consult with staff associations on the issue.

Christy Galligan says anyone cannot be tested without cause and that the constitutional presumption of innocence must be upheld.

It's understood civilian members of An Garda Siochána would also be subjected to the proposed random drug testing, something Derek Mullen, national secretary of the Civil Service Division of Forsa told Ocean FM News his members would be opposed to.

He said the lack of engagement with his members on the issue was 'appalling.'
