Former mayor calls for all teachers, SNAs to be trained in First Aid

A Sligo councillor wants it to be made compulsory for all teachers and special needs assistants to be trained in First Aid.

Independent Councillor Marie Casserly says recent statistics show 15 people a day dying from sudden death syndrome and 125 people a year die from choking.

Councillor Casserly says she knows from her own experiene as a teacher that students may have conditions they do not want others to know about.

She will ask Sligo County Council today to write to the ministers for health, education and children asking that such training be introduced.

She says it's important teachers and SNAs know how to deal with emergencies that arise.
