Crime statistics released today have been described by a Sligo Leitrim TD as absolutely shocking.
The data shows that assaults on Gardaí increased by over a quarter between 2019 and 2022.

The figures also show that crime generally is on the rise and respect for Gardai is in decline.
The Justice Minister plans to increase sentencing for those who assault members of an Garda Síochána or the emergency services.
