The government has signed the contract for the National Broadband Plan.
It aims to bring high-speed internet to 1.1 million people, largely in rural Ireland.
Communications Minister Richard Bruton has tweeted that today is an "historic day for Ireland."
He says it's the biggest investment in country areas since rural electrification.
The first homes under this project are likely to be connected next year while work is set to begin this year on broadband hubs, which are communal workspaces in rural Ireland with access to high-speed internet.
The project will cost almost three billion euro.
333 Million Euro will be invested in the counties of Sligo Leitrim and Donegal.
It has been confirmed that €59m will be invested to deliver high-speed broadband to County Sligo.
As an initial step, the Government has published a list of approximately 300 community centres, schools, library hubs and local GAA halls in every county that will be connected to high-speed broadband during 2020, to enable communities to quickly get free public access to high-speed broadband.
