Half a million euro for historic sites in NW

About half a million euro in funding has been announced today for the maintenance of historic monuments and sites in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

Sligo will get about €205,000, Donegal €191,000 and Leitrim €103,000.

The money is being allocated by the National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage through the county councils.

The biggest amount in Sligo is going to Moygara Castle, near Gurteen, which is getting almost €85,000.

Smaller amounts are going to the Green Fort in Sligo, Doonfore and Enniscrone castles, St Fechin's Church, the Kilross Stone, and Easkey Abbey.

Among the sites to benefit in Donegal are St Catherine's Church and Graveyard in Killybegs, Kilmacrennan Church and Graveyard, Malin Well Church, Doon Fort, and O'Doherty's Keep Tower House.

The two beneficiaries in Leitrim are Gubalaun Abbey and Kilbride Church.

Sligo Councillor Donal Gilroy, chairman of the Sligo Heritage Forum, said this money will towards conserving sites and monuments that generations of our ancestors have helped to protect.
