The incoming Taoiseach wants to ensure student accommodation contracts are confined to the academic year.
Universities and student groups have expressed outrage that college goers are being forced into taking rooms for the entire year rather than the standard 40 week lease.
The Higher Education Minister Simon Harris and Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien will seek amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act to come into force before the new academic year.
The standard student accommodation undergraduate lease is 38-40 weeks. By moving to a 51-week model, the providers are guaranteed rental income for the entirety of the year, with a 1-week timeframe in which to get the accommodation ready for new tenants.
Both Ministers agree the actions of these providers is unacceptable and while it may suit some third level students, it is not desirable for the majority of college goers.
Minister Harris has also written to all relevant local authorities seeking an urgent assessment of the planning permissions provided and appropriate responses.
