It is hoped that construction will start sooner rather than later on a planned extension of Sligo University Hospital.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the planned development had gone out to tender.
The extension will see a new 42-bed unit added to the existing facility, consisting of two 21-bed wards, and single en-suite rooms with ancillary accommodation.
One locally elected representative is hopeful that this will go some way to easing overcrowding experienced on a daily basis.
Cathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliffe Municipal District, Councillor Thomas Walsh says its a welcome development for the hospital.
