Sligo hopes to know by February next year if it is any nearer to getting a long-awaited new multi-million euro library.
A decision is expected in the New Year on an application for money from the Urban Regeneration Development Fund for a €9m library in The Mall area of the town.
A proposed state-of-the-art library is included in a plan involving a partnership between the county council and IT Sligo, for what would be known as the Sligo Learning and Ideas Generation Centre.
If the grant application is successful, a feasibility study would follow, with hopes the new library would be designed, built and open to the public by April 2022.
Councillor Chris MacManus says a new library is badly needed in Sligo town.
