The HSE is advising parents of the importance of hand hygiene for children because of what it describes as 'a large increase in a potentially serious stomach bug over the last few weeks.'
It mainly affects smaller children, aged about 1 to 4 years.
Children who spend time outdoors, particularly on farms, are more likely to pick up the bug.
Teresa O Dowd, specialist registrar in public health medicine with HSE North West, has been telling Ocean FM News about the extent of the infection and why it might be happening now.
