Increase in 14 day rate across the region

The 14 day incidence rate of Covid-19 has increased in all local electoral areas in the region.

As of midnight Wednesday last, the national rate is now 509.7 with 24,272 new cases recorded over the two week period.

While as of Monday, the rate in the South Donegal Local Electoral Area was 581.3, up from 486.9 a week ago.

Manorhamilton in Co. Leitrim has gone from 425.1 480.5.

The 14 day incidence rate of Covid-19 per 100,000 population is now 486.6 In Sligo/Drumcliffe, an increase from 356.4.

Sligo/Strandhill has gone from 407 449.6, while Ballymote/Tubbercurry has the highest rate of Covid-19 in the OceanFM region for a second week in a row.

The Local Electoral Area has a rate of 617.3, up from 583.6.

A total of 552 new cases of the virus were recorded in the region this time with the majority, 165, documented in Ballymote/Tubbercurry.

The county rate for Leitrim is 377.6, Sligo has a rate of 598.2 while donegal is on 1,044.7.

The Chief Medical Officer says a rapid rise in incidence of the disease, means Covid-19 is circulating widely.

While UCC Professor, and co-founder of the Independent Scientific Advocacy Group which advocates for a Zero Covid policy, Gerry Killeen, says the figures are worrying, ahead of unvaccinated children returning to school:
