Increase to vacant home tax 'poorly thought out'

Increase to vacant home tax 'poorly thought out'

A Sligo Councillor is claiming that a Social Democrats proposal to increase the vacant home tax to 10 percent is poorly thought out and will only inflict further misery on the owners of such properties that do not want to become landlords.

The current rate of point three percent on vacant homes will do little to incentivise property owners to bring their vacant homes back into use according to the Social Democrats

Geo Directory figures estimate about 83 thousand properties are lying vacant, while over 21 thousand are derelict.

Ballymote Tubbercurry FF councillor Paul Taylor says there are legitimate reasons why property owners have not renovated these buildings such as cost and not wanting to become landlords.

Cllr Taylor says everyone should have the right to hold such assets for their family members to use in the future and reiterated his view that one tax does not fit all.
