Increased confidence that St Mary's College will remain open

There are hopes that the trustees of St Mary's College in Ballisodare may decide on this Thursday not to go ahead with their decision to close the school.

It's after a meeting yesterday between representatives of those campaigning to keep the school open and the CEO of the Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust, Dr Marie Griffin.

The meeting took place at CEIST headquarters in Kildare.

It was attended by Katrina Finnegan and Anne Marie McCormack, of the Save St Mary's College working group, Sligo Independent Alliance Councillor Marie Casserly and Fine Gael local election candidate Thomas Walsh, who said it was a positive meeting.

Cllr Casserly says St Mary's is not the first school to face closure but which succeeded in staying open.
