A Leitrim Cllr has described reported plans to jail homeowners for excessive turf burning as 'madness'.
New regulations on the sale and use of turf came into force yesterday and those who burn turf excessively could face jail terms of up to two years.

According to reports, local authorities will now be tasked with ensuring those burning turf to heat their homes are not creating a 'significant level of air pollution and causing a nuisance' to neighbours.
Leitrim Sinn Fein Cllr Padraig Fallon has doubts over how the regulations will be enforced and that nobody should be jailed for heating their home:
