Sinn Fein Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny's change in brief within the party has been deemed as a demotion.
It's part of a reshuffle of the front bench ahead of the next General Election details of which were announced yesterday.
However as part of the move, Sinn Fein Leader Mary Lou McDonald announced she was dropping Martin Kenny, John Brady and Mairéad Farrell from key portfolios to what have been described as less prominent briefs.
Mr Kenny was dropped as justice spokesperson and appointed to the communications and transport brief with Kerry TD Pa Daly taking over the reins of Justice.
Deputy Kenny previously told the Irish Times that he had a keen interest in becoming Minister for Justice in a future Sinn Féin Government.
