Up to a dozen people from Kilcar gathered at Donegal Town District Court today in “silent support” of an asylum seeker who has been living in the south- west Donegal village.
It follows the arrest of Vikram Sharma, known also as Ricky, on Saturday.
Also known as Ricky, Mr. Sharma has been living in Kilcar for the past three years.
The supporters sat silently in court as Detective Garda Deirdre Durcan gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Vikram Sharma, at 7.35 pm at Main Street Kilcar on March 24.
The 32-year-old of Nite Bite, Main Street, Kilcar was brought to Ballyshannon Garda Station and formally charged.
The court heard that Mr. Sharma, as a non-national present in the State aged over 16, is charged for failing to produce a valid passport or similar document of identification at the request of Gardai.
The court heard this is contrary to Section 12 of the Immigration Act 2004.
Judge Kevin Kilrane asked if the State had any application to make.
Inspector Denis Joyce told the court that a passport had been handed in this morning and there was no objection to bail.
The defendant was released on an independent bond of E300 put up by Martin Byrne and a cash bond of E300.
The defendant was released on condition that he resides with Martin Byrne, who was in court, at Churchtown Kilcar.
He was not to engage with any employment and he was to proceed with his claim for asylum in this country.
The case was adjourned to May 28, for mention at Donegal Town District Court.
