Lifebuoys in Sligo are to be fitted with sensors to alert the council if they are missing from their stations or needs repairs.
€120,000 is being allocated for the work under the government's 'Our Rural Future Digital Innovation Programme'.
Independent Councillor Marie Casserly says it will help save lives in the long term.
