Local councils to be finalised today

Following the recent local elections, the make up of Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal's County Councils is set to be finalised today.

Sligo host their AGM at 10am, with Donegal's getting underway at 11am, and Leitrim at 12 noon.

In Sligo, Independent Councillor Declan Bree is expected to be elected as Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, in recognition of his 50 years serving as a councillor.

Regarding the formation of the Council for the next five years, it's understood that Fianna Fail and the Independents have joined forces to make a majority.

The six Fianna Fail councillors, Independents Joe Queenan, Michael Clarke and Marie Casserly, along with Labour's only representative, Nessa Cosgrove, are expected to make up the pact.

Cathaoirligh over the next five years will consist of Fianna Fáil and Independent representatives, with the order after Cllr Bree understood to be Donal Gilroy, Paul Taylor, Tom MacSharry and Marie Casserly.

Meanwhile, in Donegal, it's not yet known how the power-share will be divided between the parties.

Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein both have 10 seats each, while the 100% Redress Party have pipped Fine Gael by 4 seats to 3.

The make-up of the last council saw Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and a small number of Independents share power between them.

It's understood that there is an appetite for a similar arrangement this time around, but due to the emergence of the 100% Redress Party, it remains to be seen if that is a possibility.

The AGM for Leitrim County Council is getting underway in Carrick-On-Shannon today, and it's not yet known what has been agreed on there in terms of formation there.
