Sligo/Leitrim independent TD Marian Harkin is seeking the return of the army's 4th Western Brigade.
The restoration of the Brigade and the re-establishment of its headquarters in Custume Barracks, Athlone, has been discussed as part of Government formation talks.
Deputy Harkin says the disbandment of the unit eight years ago had a profound effect on soldiers, including those based in Finner Camp in Donegal.

Tomorrow is the deadline for the conclusion of talks on government formation.
A number of issues between the parties involved - Fianna Fail Fine Gael and the Greens - still remain outstanding and it's thought unlikely the deadline will be met.
