Mairead McGuinness the new EU Commissioner

Midlands/North West MEP Mairead McGuinness has been named as Phil Hogan's successor as Ireland's EU Commissioner.

Ms. McGuinness, who is currently Vice-President of the European Parliament, was selected by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after both she and Andrew McDowell were interviewed for the role yesterday.

Ireland's lost the key trade portfolio, with the MEP for the North West instead taking over responsibility for financial services.

Fine Gael Councillor Colm Markey is to replace Mairead McGuinness as MEP for the Midlands -North West constituency

Aged, 48, he runs a family farm in Togher, County Louth.

Had Cllr Markey not accepted the role as MEP, the next choice would have been Sligo/Leitrim TD Frank Feighan.
