A plan to give every household 100 euro off an energy bill is being slated by opposition parties.
The one off deduction, which will not be means-tested, is in response to rapidly rising energy costs.
100 euro will be automatically deducted from one bill due in March or April of next year.
One local Independent TD, thinks the government's proposed €100 voucher is 'ridiculous.'
Deputy Thomas Pringle says time needs to be devoted to find a system that will help people that actually need it on a long term basis.
The government's proposal comes as latest figures from Central Statistics Office revealed the annual rate of inflation rose to 5.3% in November, its highest level since June 2001.
Electricity, gas and other fuels are up 29% annually, which is the largest increase, with transport just behind at 28%.
Speaking to OceanFM News, Deputy Pringle says the real beneficiaries are energy companies.
