Major shortfall to meet Donegal LIS Schemes

Major shortfall to meet Donegal LIS Schemes

A south Donegal councillor says money announced for work on roads under the Local Improvement Scheme 'goes nowhere near' what is required in the Donegal Municipal District.

Usually, public money is spent only on public roads but money allocated under LIS Schemes goes for work on private roads used by a few householders or by farmers to get to their lands.

Those benefiting from the road also make a contribution toward the cost of the work.

€10.5m has been allocated nationally by government for LIS schemes, with the Donegal Municipal District getting a 5% increase.

But Fianna Fail Councillor Micheál Naughton has been voicing the opinions of many other councillors throughout the north west when he says that while the increase is welcome, it's not enough for the mileage of roads and laneways that need work.
