A Sligo/Leitrim TD says it's now up to the HSE to decide if a fixed cardiac catherisation lab should be provided at Sligo University Hospital.
Fine Gael Deputy Tony McLouighlin says this follows the completion by hospital group Saolta of a 'business case' for developing the cardiology service further in the region.
That 'business case' has now been submitted to the HSE for consideration.
A fixed cardiac cath lab would provide diagnostic and treatment facilities for patients who currently have to travel elsewhere.
At present, only a mobile lab visits Sligo on a weekly basis.
Deputy McLoughlin says a permanent, fixed service is badly needed for the entire region.
