Michael Clarke concedes election to Marian Harkin

Independent Ireland's Michael Clarke has conceded the fourth seat in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency to Marian Harkin.

The west Sligo candidate had produced a strong showing in General Election 2024 and was neck-and-neck with incumbent TD Harkin for the fourth and final seat.

However, despite being just 339 votes behind Harkin at the end of Count 11, Clarke, in an interview with Ocean FM, said his path to victory in the remaining counts had now disappeared.

If he's correct - counting of Martin Kenny's surplus of 4.052 is continuing - then the four Sligo-Leitrim TDs would be Frank Feighan (FG), Martin Kenny (SF), Eamon Scanlon (FF) and Marian Harkin (Ind).

In a separate interview earlier in the evening, Clarke had been bullish about his election prospects - and had also expressed unhappiness with some aspects of the media coverage surrounding his campaign in recent weeks.

But - in a later interview - a more contrite Clarke conceded the fourth seat to Marian Harkin and wished the eventual elected candidates every success as the constituency's representatives in the next Dáil.
