Milk suppliers want deferral of superlevy charges

The Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association is calling on the Agriculture Minister to seek a deferral of the superlevy charges from Europe.

The superlevy was built up in 2014 and 2015 from the EU in the run-up to the abolition of the milk quotas last year.

Irish Farmers were given three years to pay the fines.

However this year due milk prices being below the cost of production for almost a year now, the cuts to dairy farmers income as a result of the levy has been crippling according to the ICMSA.

Chairperson of the ICMSA's Dairy Committee Gerald Quain says they are now looking for a total deferral of the payment until next year:
