Minister's tillage payment falls far short - IFA

Minister's tillage payment falls far short - IFA

The IFA has described supports planned for the tillage sector as a long way short of what is required.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has confirmed that €100 per hectare will be paid to tillage farmers who plant field crops this year.

In a statement, IFA President Francie Gorman says that the reality is that before this announcement, the Government's 2024 allocation for tillage farmers was nearly €30m down on 2023.

This announcement he says, is unlikely to even fill that hole.

Mr.Gorman met with the Minister last week made a submission setting out a strong case for €250 per hectare.

There's now calls on the Minister to further engage with the sector and come forward with proposals to address one of the biggest crises in the history of the sector.

The Minister has cited budgetary challenges as a barrier to supporting the sector.

Mr. Gorman says that the ball is now in the new Taoiseach's court to increase the allocation to the Department of Agriculture to allow for a tillage scheme that will make a real difference.
