Mixed fortunes for local authorities in EPA report

There are contrasting fortunes for the local authorities in the North West when it comes to a new report published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The report found there was a significant geographical variation in how local authorities met targets when it comes to the enforcement of environmental outcomes relating to governance, waste, water and air and noise.

The report ranks Sligo along with Offaly, Mayo, Wexford and Waterford among the lowest performing authorities when it comes to meeting these targets.

46 per cent of the 620 assessments by the EPA were 'strong' or 'excellent' with Kildare, Dublin City, Leitrim, Monaghan and Fingal among the highest performing local authorities.

Donegal County Council was found to be performing well however, some improvements were required in terms of noise plans, in construction and demolition waste inspections and in water enforcement for the agriculture sector.

Sligo-Drumcliff Councillor, Donal Gilroy says it's disappointing that Sligo is rated as a low performing loal authority he say more tareged inspections need to be introduced.
