Mixed reaction to road repair grants for Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal

A Donegal TD has cautiously welcomed the recent announcement of over €32m for regional and local roads for Donegal for 2020.

Pat the Cope Gallagher says that although the allocation of funds for the repair of these roads are needed, there is a lack of ambition to deal with the current state and inflation of the counties roads.

The Donegal general election candidate and Leas Cheann Comhairle states that the money allocated does not cover backlog in repair works, is lower than previous grants with €33m awarded in 2018 and allows the roadworks to come to a standstill.

The outgoing Deputy says the money allocated for Fintra Bridge, located on the R263, is simply not enough :

Pat the Cope Gallagher also outlines what the incoming government needs to do to stop the North West roads falling into further disrepair:

However, Fine Gael's General Election Candidate Frank Feighan claims the announcement of €65 million for the region will significantly assist in repairs to regional and local roads in the Sligo and Leitrim:

Sligo/Leitrim, South Donegal, North Roscommon Fine Gael general election candidate Thomas Walsh claims 'unprecedented' investment in roads in County Sligo is continuing.

Meanwhile, a north Leitrim councillor says the cost of repairing some bridges in her area will have to come out of the council's own local roads fund.

Fianna Fail Councillor Mary Bohan says these are bridges that have to be repaired because, in some cases, they are closed.

And she claims that overall, there's been a reduction of about €300,000 in money for bridges in Leitrim.
