With interest increasing in the upcoming Seanad Elections another local candidate has thrown their hat in the ring to secure a position in the upper House.
The Seanad Returning Officer completed the panels of candidates yesterday, (Wednesday January 8th ).
Prior to that move taking place it emerged that the Letterkenny Fine Gael Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh has received a Taoiseach's nomination to run for the Labour Panel.
Sligo Labour County Councillor and recent General Election candidate Nessa Cosgrove is also looking to be successful on this panel.
As usual there is plenty of interest on the Agricultural panel with Leitrim Councillor and Fianna Fáil General Election candidate, Paddy O Rourke in the running as well as the sitting Fianna Fáil Senator and recent European candidate Niall Blaney also in contention to retain his position.
Also running for a place on the Agricultural panel is Gerry McMunn from Dromard in Sligo. Mr McMunn is a former member of the Fine Gael Party's National Executive.
Donegal Fine Gael Councillor John McNulty from Kilcar is also running for a position on the Agricultural panel.
Donegal MD Councillor Michael Naughton who failed to secure a place on the Fianna Fáil ticket to contest the general election has confirmed his intention to seek a position on the industrial and commercial panel.
Senator Eileen Flynn made history in 2020 by becoming the first woman from the Traveller Community to take a seat in Seanad Éireann. After a successful campaign 5 years ago she eventually secured the seat on the back of a Taoiseach's nomination. In 2025 She is contesting a seat on the Administrative panel.

Ballot papers for the election of the vocational panels will be issued on the 15 January while Polling for the vocational panels will close on January 30th .
