Motorists warned of dangers of drink driving

Motorists are being urged to make sure all the alcohol is out of their system before they drive today.

Almost one thousand people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving over the Christmas period last year.

Gardai say 11 per cent of fatal road crashes involving drink happen the morning after a night out.

The warning comes as the Sligo Roads Policing Unit yesterday observed a car with a young toddler standing behind the driver. Having stopped the car Gardai then discovered that there were eight occupants of the five seater car, two adult passengers holding a child each and three other toddlers, all children under the age of six, with none of the children in any child restraints.

The driver of the car was also disqualified, and was displaying a false NCT disc and expired road tax. The driver was arrested for driving while disqualified and received a number of charges including no insurance to appear in court on a future date.

Gardai are advising that all drivers and passengers belt up and drive safely and always ensure children are adequately secured and safe.

Liz O'Donnell from the Road Safety Authority is warning all road users to be careful if they out last night.
