Candidates contesting the recent European elections in the Midlands North West constituency spent almost €100,000 on social media advertising.
Figures published by the Irish Independent show that a total of €99,630 was spent on Meta-owned social media sites in the 90 days before polling day on June 7.
Fine Gael’s two successful candidates in the Midlands North West constituency, Nina Carberry and Maria Walsh spent €20,102 and €10,310 respectively.
Chris MacManus of Sinn Féin, who lost his seat in the European Parliament in the election, spent just over €18,008.
Fianna Fáil’s Lisa Chambers spent €14,876 with her running mates Barry Cowen at €9,614 and Niall Blaney at €4,859 spending considerably less.
Green Party Senator Pauline O’Reilly spent almost €8,500 and a €5,583 was spent by Peter Casey of Independents for Change.
Saoirse McHugh, who contested the 2019 European elections for the Green Party spent just shy of €2,000.
While two successful candidates, Independent Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan at €4,730 and Ciaran Mullooly of Independent Ireland at €1,158 were among the lowest spenders.
