New local rail freight service to the South East

A new rail freight service linking the west and south-east could reduce emissions per unit of freight by 75 per cent.

Irish Rail are working with XPO Logistics to have a twice-weekly service between Waterford Port and Ballina operating by the end of June.

They say it will reduce road congestion, with the potential to remove over 5,000 truck movements from Irish roads every year.

Irish Rail believe the new service will offer businesses a greener way of transporting freight across the country.
