New role for Bishop Alan McGuckian

Bishop Alan McGuckian, the current Bishop of Raphoe, has been appointed as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor by Pope Francis.

It’s the second largest diocese in Ireland.

The announcement was made earlier today.

Bishop McGuckian was appointed as Bishop of Raphoe in 2017 and has since undertaken a number of responsibilities as a member of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

In a statement, Archbishop Eamon Martin said that Bishop Alan’s appointment is providential at this time of political renewal in Northern Ireland, and he will no doubt bring many gifts to enable peaceful relationships to grow and flourish in his new diocese - amongst the various Churches and faith communities, as well in political and civic life.
